On Monday, February 26th, 2024, the Dobyns-Bennett High School Mock Trial Team will host a Mock Trial Exhibition Community Performance at 6:30 p.m. located at former Kingsport City Hall - Chancery Courtroom, 2nd Floor, 225 W. Center Street, downtown Kingsport.

A mock trial is a competition in which students simulate a real trial. The trial is known as "the problem," and remains consistent for all teams competing throughout Tennessee each year. The problem for this year's state competition was a criminal case, The State of Tennessee vs. Jules Capps. This incident involves Ronnie Montgomery and neighbor, Jules Capps. Capps is under suspicion of pulling a prank, gone wrong and is being charged with Vandalism over $1000, Aggravated Burglary, and First Degree Murder.

"This case has twists and turns. It is intriguing to the spectator and challenging for the students to prosecute and defend," said Sarah Beth Lovell, Dobyns-Bennett High School Mock Trial Team teacher sponsor and Spanish teacher. "Everyone who has been involved with this problem has enjoyed seeing the students work through the issues and present the best evidence for their side."

The purpose of the mock trial is for students to learn the skill of public speaking, critical thinking, and the art of forming and presenting a persuasive, cohesive argument, based on evidence, becoming fluent with processes of a courtroom trial, and the art of advocating on behalf of a client.
